BAY
*Bay needs a quiet environment where there are minimal disturbances in and around his home - rural would be ideal*
*Bay needs to be the only pet in the home*
Bay is a young male German Shepherd. On arrival Bay would react to unfamiliar people when out walking and react very strongly if any strangers approached his kennel environment. It is possible that he has been taught or encouraged to do this. However, upon assessment he showed that he was worried and under confident around people. He could, however, make friends and, if he became worried, he could sometimes choose to take himself away, which we always allowed him to do.
Bay makes the transition from a suspicious reactive dog to a goofy loving boy within a few meetings with new people. He likes nothing better to be near to those he trusts and leans in for cuddles and back rubs when out on walks. He loves to play ball and is very intelligent and keen to please his people. It is apparent that Bay can become overexcited with attention and we are working with him to teach self control and keep four paws on the ground. Fortunately, Bay came to us muzzle trained as is quite happy wearing a muzzle when being walked. This is very important as his new owners will have to undertake to always use a muzzle when walking him in public. He travels well in the car, so adopters will be able to take him to quiet walking places. He is not suited to busier environments and so we are looking for a semi-rural home that has a private garden without people passing close to the house.
Bay is reactive to dogs and cats whilst out and about and so we are looking for a home where he will be the only pet. As with unknown people, he can be under confident with unknown dogs and shows this by barking. He is learning to walk calmly and to relax in their presence. His new adopters will need to demonstrate experience with reactive German Shepherds (or similar) and the ability to continue our training plan while sensibly implementing good management.
Bay has the potential to make a wonderful companion with kind but clear and consistent adopters who meet his needs. There will need to be more than one adult in the household to share responsibilty for his care while he is settling in.
